DE is the remains of microscopic one-celled plants (phytoplankton) called diatoms that lived in the oceans and lakes that once covered the western part of the US and other parts of the world. These deposits are mined from underwater beds or from ancient dried lake bottoms thousands of years old. This means, DE has an unlimited shelf life provided you keep it dry.
There are food grade DE products that are yellow or tan in color, which indicates a higher iron content. Those that are gray in color contain more clay.
When DE comes in contact with the insects, the sharp edges lacerate the bugs' waxy exoskeleton and then the powdery DE absorbs the body fluids causing death from dehydration. Food grade DE works in a purely physical/mechanical manner, not 'chemical' and thus has no chemical toxicity. Best yet, parasites don't build up a tolerance/immunity to its chemical reaction, so rotation of wormers is unnecessary.

Internal feeding of food grade DE helps eliminate most internal worms, though possibly not all. It's also excellent when fed daily to keep down fly loads, since food grade DE is eliminated from the body, exactly the way it went in, it helps reduce the manure odor and kills flies that come in contact with it. Mix in animal feed or grain and/or feed free choice.
If fecal counts are not zero for worms and ova after feeding DE for 30 days, increase the daily dose. Feeding too small a dose of DE will not give desired results. Increasing the dose, even if greater than the above recommendations, will not harm anyone.
Some horses do fine on 1/2 cup of DE daily, others need a full cup. This reminds us, that all beings are different. So again, if the worm and ova counts are not zero, increase your daily dose.
*Some recommend to dose humans by mixing food grade DE in a glass of water before bed or first thing in the morning, well before breakfast, to allow DE time to move through and absorb toxins from one's digestive tract without interfering or absorbing nutrients from foods or liquids. Some report great results consuming 1 tsp. in a glass of water prior to each meal, 3x/day.

Like the product very much. It's convenient to use and I like 20-20-20 fertilizer. Just drop a pac into a gallon of water - the pac melts - swish around a little - and there you have it. It's on the expensive side - $8.99 a bag. Also it cost $5.74 to ship - more than half the value of the product - too expensive. MiracleGro has their own similar product that you can pick up in Walmart for about $6.50 a bag. I didn't like the "mixture." If I could find Infinity Boost Pacs in a retail store like Walmart, I'd spring for it because Walmart's price would be competitive. I bought it because I wanted to try it and I liked it - not sure whether I'll buy it again because of the expense. It's a great, convenient product but too expensive to buy on line. Update - MiracleGro gives you 24 singles@6.49 about .27 ea. Infinity Boost Pacs gives you 40 pacs for 8.99 @ .22 ea. Clearly Boost pac is cheaper than MiracleGro singles. The shipping is the killer. You would have to buy 3 pacs from Amazon for free shipping. I might do that next summer. I really liked Infinity Booster pacs beacuse they were easy to use. I tried sunflower sprouts from a local farmers market recently...and totally fell in love!!! They are my new favorite veggie. Add to salads, even sauté a side to go with meat...or just eat 'em plain.

These seeds seem to be a very high quality and give me a terrific growth of sprouts. You can Google how to grow them...not in a jar like other sprouts. And do not eat the shell that falls off, or the root end. Grow to about 4-5 inches tall and then slice off.

I grow mine in a plastic shoe box from the dollar store with a craft store piece of plastic mesh cut to fit the bottom of the shoe box. Soak seeds over night in a jar, then rinse in a jar twice daily for a few more days, then put them in a colander, wicker basket, or my shoebox deal. Continue to rinse twice daily. Once they have secured themselves to the colander, basket, or whatever you can rinse fairly hard under running water to help wash off the black shells.

YOU MUST TRY THIS!!! Very addicting...but healthy!!!

I tried two products, "HydroStretch" and "Soil Moist" (there is a third product, "Miracle-Gro Water Storing Crystals" that I did not try).
