This is pretty good stuff. At this price, for five pounds including shipping, it is also a real bargain.Gardening is a mystery to some people. I am one of them. However, I am learning.
This is the stuff to use if you have flowering bulbs that aren't flowering, or, that you would like to flower. Actually, this stuff will help any plant produce flowers.
For example, I planted a half-dozen beautiful bearded iris last fall. They came up this year. Divided (multiplied) and grew very nice healthy green leaves and stalks.
However, not one of them flowered.
That is because bulbs need a LOT of Phosphate to produce flowers year after year. You have to add phosphate in almost every soil condition to keep them flowering after the first year.
This stuff is (1) cheap; (2) and has large beads. It is the same stuff that large companies add to ordinary fertilizer to encourage blooming flowers. All the big companies do is use a dye to turn this stuff a pretty pink, The Scotts Co. 1009501 Scotts Rose & Bloom Food, or a pretty green Miraclegro Bloom Booster 1.5#, and they charge you three times as much for the dye and the pretty packaging.
The large beads are particularly desireable for garden flowers because they take longer to dissolve than the other brands with smaller beads.
To get bulbs to flower in any season you need to add this stuff to the soil right around the bulbs the year before.
Loosen up the soil around the bulb (being very careful not to injure the bulb), mulch it with compost and manure (especially cattle manure - (chicken manure can be too strong)), and, add about a teaspoon to a tablespoon of this stuff around the bulb. Water it well and it will help the bulb produce prolific flowers in the Spring.
MORE IS NOT BETTER. Triple super phosphate, in about six months, will oxidize into phosphoric acid. This is exactly what most flowering plants need to flower. Roses and grapevines love the extra acid. However, too much phosphoric acid can burn plants. Go easy on the application of this stuff. No more than a teaspoon or tablespoon spread around the base of the plant's stem.
Renew the phospate around the bulbs every year.
The best way I've found to store stuff like this is in half-gallon mason jars. Jarden 68100 6 Count Wide Mouth Canning Jars They are airtight, water tight, and, they are really handy. One half-gallon mason jar will hold just about one package of this stuff (4 lbs.). (Stay away from jars with plastic lids. The plastic will freeze, break, won't stand of the Sun's uv, and will just break apart if you store the jars outside for any period of time).
