I got 13 out of 20 to germinate, that's only 65%, but that's more than what I got from the review. My advice to other people is to wait till the Summer time to try to do this unless you have grow light inside the house. From reading the review, some people use heating pad, that's not good enough. You got to have grow light and a cover to cover up your seeds to keep the temperature and moisture in. The temperature should be 70 degree to 90 degree, the warmer the better.

Hakuro Nishiki Japanese Dappled Willow - Bonsai/Outdoors Review

It came as sort of a stubby little thing, but still healthy, green and variegated, so it shows great promise. Hirts has been a reliable source for quality, hard-to-find plants.

My one issue is with their packaging. I try to buy from local nurseries whenever possible, and turn to online buying only when I can't find what I need locally. I understand the environmental impacts of online buying and transport via fossil fuels. I try not to do it if I don't have to. To that end, I wish Hirts would switch to a biodegradable packaging medium in lieu of the Styrofoam packaging peanuts. The Styro has to go into the garbage, where I know it'll just sit forever in a landfill somewhere. There are so many better options that would get the plants here safely, and could then go into my worm bin to be digested into compost to keep the plants healthy and thriving. Shredded newspaper would be a cheap alternative.
An otherwise great company to work with, but I can't give the full five stars until they make the switch to something more responsible.
