Travelers Palm Ravenala madagascariensis
The Traveler's Palm (sometimes called Traveler's Tree) is not really a palm at all, although the trunk gives it that appearance. It's closely related to bananas (as you might guess from the shape of the leaves) and in the same family as the Bird-of-Paradise Flower. It gets its name from two distinctive characteristics. First, the leaves collect water and channel it into the base of the plant, so a thirsty traveler could cut a hole in the soft trunk and get a significant amount of drinkable water. Second, Traveler's Palms tend to grow in an east-west direction, with each new branch turning either toward or away from the sun. So it can also serve as a sort of compass, to put you back on track after quenching your thirst. Our sale Traveler Palms are actively growing in 2.5 to 3 inch pots and are 4- 7 inches tall. Will develop the distinctive fan shape as they become larger. If you plant them outside they will grow and look like the photograph and larger. If kept potted the same shape will happen, but a MUCH smaller plant.
Plant shown in picture is 5 years old. Travelers Palms are one of the most awe-inspiring natural palms in the world that can tolerate cold temperature down to 20F. Grows best in USDA Zones 9a (20 to 25 F) to 11 (above 40 F). In the North grow as a potted plant placing it out on the patio for the warm months. It likes full sun but can also grow in light shade. They grow best in moist, well drained soil. Native to Madagascar, Travelers Palms easily adapts to a wide range of soils and makes a great centerpiece for any area or landscape. It tolerates sandy and clay soils.
