I tried the Jumbo Pink Banana squash first maybe 8 years ago and have been growing it every gardening season since then. Hands down - this squash is, in my opinion, if not the best - one of the best winter squash you can grow. First of all - it's an open pollinator. Grow it once, save the seeds and you'll never have to buy seeds for it again. Secondly - the taste is outstanding. Sweet and slightly nutty with just a trace of vanilla to it. Thirdly - it has incredible shelf life. After harvesting this years crop I cooked up the last Jumbo Pink Banana squash from "last" years garden. It didn't have a blemish or rot mark on it and the interior was also free of any spoiled meat. It was every bit as tasty a year after harvesting as the other squash from the same garden was a year earlier. After a year on the shelf I noticed that the seed cavity was slightly larger due to the flesh shrinking. A word regarding the flesh; besides its wonderful flavor it is more moist than most other winter squash that I'm familiar with. The flesh is a warm golden orange color that makes for an attractive looking pot of soup.2012 my garden had 6 of these Jumbo Pink Banana squash plants in it. This fall I harvested 8 squash for a total of 85 pounds. My bigger ones were in the 13 pound range. We have a relatively short growing season. Less than 100 days. I live on the edge of the desert, we get maybe 9 inches of rain a year and we're in a drought cycle now. Still I consider that a not too shabby harvest.
Beware: The vines like to travel so give them some room to roam. I planted my potatoes near the squash. They were eventually overgrown by squash vines but it really didn't matter since the potato vines were dying back at about the time they were overran by the squash vines.
Another thing I like about these squash is; since they are so large you can feed more than one family with just one squash. With half of a medium sized one you can cook a 4-5 quart pot of soup and still give away the other half to friends. Leave the seeds in it and tell them to grow their own next year.
