Cover Crop Mixture 5# Mix covers 1/2 acre. Plowdown, green manure, get your garden ready! Review

This product but it germinated very quickly and grew very rapidly in my northern Illinois garden. However, be aware that there is absolutely no way that this will cover 1/2 acre. Not even remotely close! My vegetable garden is about 20' x 75 feet and it just covered that with a little extra to spare. That's about 1/29th of an acre! I used about 2/3rds of it to seed the garden but had to use most of the remainder to re-seed some thin spots. Those thin spots were probably not due to the product but rather to the depth I raked them in so that's not an issue with the seed. I would say that you could probably plant about 1/20th of an acre with this product and that's a generous estimate. I think the producer may have made a mistake in their calculations. I think they may have meant to say it would cover 1/20th of an acre instead of 1/2 acre. In any case, 1/20th acre coverage is what you should plan on. That figure is also consistent with the fact that the charts at seed stores have always recommended that I use about five pounds of green manure or cover crop seeds for my garden and that has alway worked out just about right. To plant 1/2 acre with this product, you would need about 50 pounds of seed.

That said, I am happy with the product and will probably order more. However, on inspection, I noticed that the plants that grew the most were weeds. I'm not sure what the name of the weed is but I get them in my garden although, after planting this seed, I got enormous mounds of them so I know they did not come from weed seed in my soil. I turned in the crop before they went to seed. To do that, I first chopped the crop down with a string trimmer and then I mowed everything before tilling. That worked quite well.

Delivery was super-fast!

If you look at the video that someone uploaded about this product, you may notice that they turned this green manure crop in when it had very little growth. In fact, it had barely got started. She had about as much growth as I had in about a week or so after planting the seed. Don't do that. Let it produce a lot more growth before turning it under or tilling it into the soil. After all, that's the whole point of green manure. You want a lot of organic material to add to the soil and you also want good root growth to help break up the soil and add more organic material. From what I can see in the video, that person wasted the product and, despite what they said, they would get almost no benefit from turning it in when it had grown so little. It's not just the top growth you are interested in but, more importantly, the roots. Let them grow. I should have taken a picture of my crop before I turned it in but it was about 3 feet high and very thick after only about a month or so. Someone might have mistaken it for a big group of bushes from a distance. Let it grow but turn it in before it goes to seed unless you want it to self-plant a second crop.

By the way, I saw almost no legumes in the mix - clover or otherwise. Legumes fix nitrogen in the soil so I was disappointed to not see many legumes growing.

A tip: If you have any old seeds lying around, go ahead and plant them with this mix. In fact, almost any plant will act as green manure. Just be sure to till them in before they go to seed. I had a dozen or so packages of old seeds that I planted with this mix. Some flower seeds will not only look nice but may attract butterflies, bees, etc.
