Product Description

The fronds of this fern are as colorful as flowers. Their intricate patterns of silvery shite on deep green, accented with reddish stems, provide a dash of light in a shady corner.

FERN: A fern is any one of a group of about 12,000 species of plants. Unlike mosses they have xylem and phloem (making them vascular plants). They have stems, leaves, and roots like other vascular plants. Ferns do not have either seeds or flowers (they reproduce via spores).

Hardy ferns grow best in moist, shady locations with soil high in organic matter. Their varied forms, sizes, and textures add interest to the garden.

Highly variegated, green fronds are shaded with silver and highlighted with burgundy red. Colors become more intense with some morning of afternoon sun. Hardy in zones 3-9. Shade lover grows 14-18 inches tall.

'Japanese Painted' Fern - Athyrium - Shade Lover - Hardy - One Quart Pot Review

I love difficult but pretty plants.
I'm attempting to grow a hosta indoors Hosta - Touch of Class.
And I realize that the Japanese Painted Fern is also usually grown outdoors but since I'm in an apartment I decided to see if I could grow both as house plants.
So far so good, the fern is very hardy and very pretty.
I only water once a week and it seems to be doing just fine.
I get almost zero sunlight in my apartment just bright light from the windows so this plant really was perfect.
I'll let you know if the plant thrives....

Review update 11/07/11...
My plant died. :(
I'm heartbroken and I have no idea what I did wrong.
Maybe not the right choice for a house plant after all.
I think "Charlie" would have been happier as an outside plant.
Bye Charlie, I hope you're happy in painted fern Heaven (sniffle)...
