Crossbow Herbicide Dow Specialty Herbicide 1 gallon 55555282 Review

I have a serious - as in BIBLICAL - poison ivy infestation in part of our yard we call "the field". It's a little over an acre of open meadow adjacent to my lawn, and there is poison ivy in it EVERYWHERE - just a little in some areas, but it is the dominant plant life in other areas. I tried Round-Up poison ivy spray (glyphosate + triclopyr) but is not effective enough unless you double the recommended concentration but then it kills everything around it, too. Then I tried Ortho's "Brush-B-Gon Poison Ivy Oak & Brush Killer" (triclopyr) which appeared to do next to nothing for the first couple of weeks, but in fact the poison ivy eventually died after 3-4 weeks. Still, I could only find it in diluted ready-for-use in 1-gallon bottles, and I'm not about to buy a pallet of gallon bottles to cover the acre I need to treat!!! Where to turn next?

A colleague who grew up farming recommended Crossbow (triclopyr + 2,4-D), so I found it here on Amazon and bought it. I also (locally) bought a used 15-gallon tow-behind sprayer to apply it. I spoke with a product specialist in the Dow Agro customer service department to make sure I understood how to best apply it and she told me to apply 1.5 gallons of concentrate per acre for poison ivy control, when the temperature is <85*F, minimal wind, with the target plants grown out since the last mowing long enough for there to be enough foliage to spray the product on. I waited for the right conditions to spray it, which came this past Saturday morning.

Later in the day, I walked by the field and was stunned by what I saw - that morning's healthy poison ivy leaves were already spotted and wilting, the milkweed was already curled over, and the clover and a couple other broad-leaf weeds were already black and completely dead!! After only 8 hours!!! Now it's 4 days post-application, and almost all the poison ivy and most other weeds and hummock grasses are completely dead too! The super-thin-blade grasses seem to be collateral casualties unfortunately, but the regular, normal-width-blade grasses appears to be unaffected by it. I have literally never seen such fast and dramatic effects from a weed killer!! It seems like a very expensive product at $75-$100 per acre per application, but I don't know of any other product that will give you that kind of ferocious herbicidal ability for a tough plant like poison ivy, at any price!

FOLLOW UP TO ORIGINAL REVIEW:

After my 2012 3% Crossbow application and the hard 2012-13 New England winter, a tiny little bit of poison ivy came back this year (the "field" is now a proper, mowed lawn...) - <0.01% of what I had before last year's Crossbow treatment. I sprayed a ~1.5% concentration (~3 qts or 0.75 gal/acre) - about half the strength of my 2012 treatment - this spring and it killed most, but not all, of the poison ivy. I'd estimate about 1% of the poison ivy survived the 2013 spraying, and all the grass survived just fine. I mixed up a ~3% solution in a hand sprayer and "took care" (in the "Pulp Fiction" sense of the phrase) of the remaining survivors.

I'm still very happy with Crossbow, but I would recommend applying it at 2-3% concentration for poison ivy. Any stronger will kill your grass, while any weaker won't be effective enough.
