Renee's Garden - Native American Three Sisters Garden Review
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0013G6A3G/ref=cm_cr_rev_prod_imgIt's a little absurd to rate something I won't plant for six months, but I have long been familiar with the Three Sisters and have meant to plant them together but kept forgetting. This fall our handyman, who is mixed Native American and Spanish, has cleared me out a large spot where I had the compost heap for five years, and has proclaimed the soil rich enough to grow anything. So this will be the ideal year to grow the Three Sisters and the ideal place. The idea is this: The corn grows up, providing the support for the beans that are planted later. The pumpkins intertwine themselves on the ground, providing the shade to keep the roots of the corn and beans from roasting themselves. The beans may be harvested as they grow, to eat green, or not until the end of the summer, when the corn and pumpkins also are ready. In that case they are used as dried beans. This has worked for thousands of years, in places of very little rain, and I live in Utah, a desert state. I am looking forward to seeing this beautiful trio next year, and eating the produce when it is ready. I'll share the produce with the handyman, who has become a dear friend in the eight months since we hired him.
