For the last 3 years, I have had a constant potential irritation from internal hemorhoids, and occasional external hemorhoids..The first year, I tried various OTC creams, and herbs and herb combinations, both oral and anal applications. This includes: butcher's broom, stone root, horse chestnut, and several commercial herb mixes. Some were ineffective, while others sometimes worked well, but often did not. I wanted to avoid the pricy herb mix capsules, if possible. Then, 2 years ago, I came across an obscure reference to a mix of goldenseal and white oak bark powder as a nearly forgotten old time preventative and remedy. Got some capsules of each, and found that both, independently, were effective for at least a week, when applied anally daily. Since goldenseal is much more expensive than oak bark, I decided to stick with the latter. Later, I found that pau d'acro bark capsules, also very cheap, worked reasonably well, but my impression was that the oak bark worked even better. Recently, I decided to try this oak bark powder, which is even cheaper on a daily basis than the capsule form. It also works great, probably tending to last longer(often 2 days) than the capsule material. My technique is very simple. Squeeze or pour a dab or more(How much, is up to you) of a cheap body lotion or hand cream(all brands I have tried work, but you don't want it too runny) into a small container(I use my wife's empty tiny cosmetic container, with screw lid). Measure in an appropriate amount of powder and stir with a blunt-ended table knife(Takes about 10sec, with the small amounts I make up). You want a concentrated paste, but not too dry. One finger-dab inside the anus and another around the outside usually does the trick. I make up enough for just a few days, as I don't know how stable this mix is. You may find it actually can last much longer.I have also read that the powder is good to prevent or treat gum problems and cavities. Thus, I have recently taken to putting 1/8 teaspoon worth of powder in my mouth before I sleep, as a preventative. Not as bad as it sounds. Besides, this later ingested material probably also helps keep your hemorrhoids at bay. Good for both ends of your alimentary canal! Others recommend taking it as a tea. Too much trouble for me, and I don't like hot drinks.
